  Junk food adverts 'deceiving kids'
Updated 29 July 2003, 12.07

Kids are being given the wrong messages by adverts for junk food, experts say.

The snazzy adverts make fatty and sugary foods seem like cool things to snack on, according to the Food Commission, which checks up on how and what people eat.

Sweets

It says kids are made to believe the foods are "exciting, fun things that will improve your performance".

The commission is worried that - at a time when loads of children are overweight - the adverts are drowning out any advice given to kids on healthy eating.

It also reckons that parents can't be blamed either, because it's impossible to tell some foods are unhealthy from the ads.

It's also annoyed about junk food companies targeting kids by linking up with films and websites.

Billions of pounds are spent every year on ads for unhealthy snacks.

The commission is now calling for junk food ads aimed at kids to be banned.
