  Ritalin: the facts
Updated 08 September 2003, 18.44
A report says Ritalin is being sold illegally in playgrounds
What is Ritalin?

It's a drug which is given to kids with behaviour problems, like hyperactivity.

Its real name is methylphenidate.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition which stops children concentrating. Ritalin calms them down and makes them concentrate.

About one in 20 kids in the UK have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Why is Ritalin in the news?

A report has said that lots of people have started selling Ritalin illegally.

Some people take it because it also stops you getting hungry, so they take it to try and keep thin, but this is dangerous too.

Some people take it because it gives them a brief "rush".

What is wrong with it?

Ritalin can have many bad side effects.

These include depression, lack of sleep, mood swings, bad vision, being sick and much more. It can also speed up the heart and change the way people feel.

Also, some kids are being bullied into giving up their prescription.

As well as this, many dealers mix the Ritalin with amphetamine, a very dangerous drug.
