  David Blaine begins starvation stunt
Updated 05 September 2003, 19.47
David Blaine: how he'll live in the plastic box
David Blaine has begun his latest crazy stunt.

On Friday evening the illusionist entered a plastic box hanging from a crane where he'll attempt to survive without food for 44 days - that's just over 6 weeks.

All a trick?

Blaine says during that time he'll only be able to drink water fed to him through a tube.

The box measures just 2.1m by 2.1m by 0.9m and is hanging near Tower Bridge in London.

With him inside he's just got blankets, a mat, a backpack with a diary in, pens, nappies, moist tissues and lip balm.

Some people might think Blaine will cheat, but he said: "There will be no trickery and no means of escape."

The magician is famous for his stunt tricks.

Three years ago he spent more than 61 hours in a 6-tonne block of ice.

The year before that he was buried six feet down under a glass tank filled with water for a week.

Dangerous stunt

But whatever happens the trickster won't break any records - Guinness have said other people have survived on water for longer.

And they say they don't want to be seen to be encouraging people to starve themselves because it's dangerous.
