  Crackdown on piercing and tattooing
Updated 03 September 2003, 17.35

Henna tattoos and piercings will only be applied by well trained professionals, after the government announced strict new laws.

The new laws come after many people became worried that badly trained body artists were injuring people.

Infections

A nine-year-old girl was badly scarred after getting a henna tattoo while on holiday, and a 17-year-old boy died after his lip piercing became infected in 2002.

Half of all doctors have said they are seeing more and more infections caused by bad piercings.

Now anyone in the body art business will have to meet tight health guidelines.

If they don't have the proper training, or meet these guidelines, they could be shut down.
