Charity single Spirit In The Sky, by Gareth Gates and comedy family the Kumars, also added to the total when it shot to the top of the charts.
Hair was the theme for Red Nose Day 2003 and so many people got into the spirit of it that the nation sold out of red spray-on hair colour.
Red Nose Day host Lenny Henry said: "Everyone who got involved should feel really proud of themselves."
The cash will be spent over the next two years on projects helping people in the UK and Africa.
