Former South African president Nelson Mandela quizzed David Beckham on his cornrow hairstyle when the pair met on Wednesday.
They chatted about Becks' barnet for a few seconds and Mandela laughed, patted his own hair and said he was "too old" to comment on new trends.
World Cup bid
He spent years in prison while he was campaigning against 'Apartheid' - a system in South Africa which took away almost all black peoples' rights.
Becks met Mandela to show England's backing for South Africa's bid to host the 2010 World Cup.
"To meet a great man such as you is an amazing honour for everyone involved in the Football Association and the England team," Becks told him.
"If I look after myself and treat my body right, I'd love to be here in 2010," he added.
