Braille Order of the Phoenix is released
Updated 03 July 2003, 15.57
OOTP is now available in Braille
Blind children are getting stuck into Order of the Phoenix at last after Braille editions of the book were posted all over the country.

The Braille version couldn't be made until OOTP came out on 21 June.

But work started immediately to turn the 766 pages of the book into Braille - a system of raised dots which allows blind people to read.

The Braille version's publishers told CBBC Newsround's website they have had to divide OOTP into 16 A4-sized volumes, each with around 90 pages!

An extract from the Braille alphabet

It takes up quite a lot of space and has to be printed on heavy paper, which means it was impossible to fit all of OOTP into one book.

The first four volumes were sent out earlier this week and the rest of the book will be posted to people over the next two weeks. It will be sent out three volumes at a time.

Big demand

John Donaldson from The Scottish Braille Press told us: "We've had about 80 orders for OOTP - that's big demand for a Braille book."

People have to mail-order their copies.

John said that there had been about 50 orders for each of the previous four Potter books since they were published.

Even though the Braille version of the book is made up of 16 volumes, it will be about the same price as the non-Braille version.

There are around 29,000 blind or partially-sighted people under 20 in the UK.
