Fizzy drinks could be banned in schools
Updated 01 July 2003, 21.06
School canteen
Fizzy drinks machines could disappear from schools if doctors get their way.

The British Medical Association - an important group of doctors - wants them banned in all schools.

Fact File
Fizzy facts
Studies say 1 in 5 children drinks 10 cans of fizzy drinks a week
To some schools, the machines are worth £10,000 a year
Not drinking enough water can affect concentration

They say too many fizzy drinks can affect your concentration and can also interrupt your sleep, especially the ones with caffeine in.

The BMA says it might ask the health and education departments in the government to think about getting rid of vending machines.

One Norfolk school's already done just that.

And now state-run schools in New York, US, have banned sugary sweets and fizzy drinks from September.

They won't be able to sell anything thought to be unhealthy or fattening.
