  Can kids gamble?
Updated 01 July 2003, 15.48
A teenager has won 1.8 million Lotto cash

The law at the moment says:

  • You need to be 16 to be able to buy lottery tickets or scratch cards. If a younger person does play and win they can not claim their prize.

  • There are no age limits for who can play on fruit machines, but anyone under 18 is banned from the parts of amusement arcades that offer prizes of 10 or more.

Can gambling be addictive?

Some kids do get addicted to gambling, mostly by playing on fruit machines.

It happens because when you do something, and get a reward for doing it, you are more likely to do it again and again.

If for example you win some money on a fruit machine, you will feel very good about it.

Carry on playing and you will continue to win, but only "every once in a while". You will be losing for most of the time. You might win 10 but lose 50 in the process. Can kids with gambling problems get help?

If you think you have a problem the hardest bit might be to admit it.

You can get help from your family and friends but it is also a very good idea to contact a counsellor.
