  Kids warned about exam stress
Updated 30 April 2003, 07.26
Children sit around 87 exams at school
Children have been warned about the effects of exam stress.

Many kids worry too much about tests and this can lead to them not sleeping, drinking alcohol and getting headaches, said mental health charity, Mind.

Other bad symptoms can be:

  • Nightmares
  • Depression
  • Suicide

Most young people sit around 87 exams during their school life, Mind said.

'Don't try to cope on your own'

"Exams are always a really difficult experience and everybody deals with them differently," a spokesman for the charity said.

Children must not suffer exam stress alone
"Often, kids are not sleeping properly or are not going out and socialising as they would normally."

"It is important they don't deal with the stress all on their own."

Worried pupils should speak to their parents, their teachers, friends or an organisation which helps kids with stress.

Mind have published a leaflet, called How to Cope with Exam Stress, to help kids who are feeling under pressure.
