Government to say if UK will join the euro
Updated 09 June 2003, 07.37
Will it be euros or pounds in the future?
People in the UK will find out on Monday if the government thinks the country is ready to swap the pound for the euro.

Chancellor Gordon Brown will tell MPs in parliament if he thinks joining the euro is a good idea at the moment.

Although no one knows exactly what he's going to say, it's thought that Mr Brown will say he wants the UK to join the euro, but not at the moment.

Mr Brown has been using five very important tests to work out if the UK is ready to change its money, and so far those tests haven't been passed.

Even if the chancellor did think the tests had been passed, it doesn't mean we'd all be using euros instead of pounds tomorrow.

Before the pound can be ditched the people of the UK will have to vote that they want to start spending euros, in a referendum.

If they voted yes then it would take a long time for banks, shops and businesses to be ready to deal in euros instead of pounds.
