Kids learn rubbish habits from their parents
Updated 04 June 2003, 15.16
Litter bug
Mums and dads set a rubbish example to kids when it comes to being litter bugs, a new study says.

While nine out of 10 of them tut at young people dropping rubbish, they do it themselves in front of their kids!

Nearly 50% of children in the survey said they had seen their mums and dads chucking stuff on the streets.

Environmental groups - like LivingLand who did the survey - say it's time people stopped blaming children for the country's litter problem.

They say we should all be responsible for our rubbish and understand why it is hurtful to the environment and animals.

Over 69,000 animals were treated for injuries caused by rubbish last year.

Cash and trash

There is five times more litter than there was in the 1960s and it costs about 332m a year to clear it all up, experts say.

They also reckon trash like cans or orange peel can still be hanging around 100 years later because it doesn't rot away.

To get the message across, there will be a National No Litter Day on 24 June when kids will be asked to pick up the rubbish in their school grounds.
