UK website to help runaways goes online
Updated 29 May 2003, 18.09
Runaways often end up on the streets
The UK's first website to help and give advice to young people who have run away from home has been launched.

One young person runs away every six minutes because of problems at home or school and loads end up sleeping rough on the streets.

Many think it's the only way they can escape their problems.

But that can be very dangerous because they can get into trouble on the streets.

The website, run by a project called Astra (Alternative Solutions to Running Away), gives support to people who have run away.

And if they have left home thinking they can escape problems, the website will help find organisations to sort them out properly.

Runaways can e-mail experts working for the site for advice so they don't have to meet face-to-face.

Lots of people who run away don't actually want to, say the project's experts. And many feel they aren't listened to.

But Astra hope their website will mean adults might take children who run away more seriously.
