  Bullying makes kids start dieting
Updated 01 April 2003, 16.31

Girls are being bullied so much about their weight that some are starting to diet from the age of nine.

One in five girls and nearly as many boys have been teased by classmates for being fat, says a new study.

But Dr Andrew Hill, who led the research by the University of Leeds, says many of the kids who are being called names are a normal weight.

He's worried the bullying could make kids more likely to suffer from eating disorders when they're older.

He says it makes kids feel bad about themselves.

And he adds that the pictures of extra-skinny celebs we see in magazines don't help, either.

Kate Winslett, star of Titanic, says she was called 'Blubber' at school.

She says it made her shy and she had problems with her weight for years.

The research shows that girls on diets tend to cut out meals, like breakfast and avoid certain foods.

Boys are more likely to turn to exercise rather than slimming.

Dr Hill hopes the study will help teachers to spot bullying and hopefully stop it.
