Safety ad barred from using Rings quote
Updated 06 March 2003, 18.29
The One Ring from LOTR
The family of Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien has refused to allow his words to be altered for use in a Welsh road safety campaign.

Road safety chiefs in Monmouthshire wanted to use words from the Lord of the Rings to get kids to wear seat belts in cars.

This year's slogan was to change Tolkien's words: "A ring to save them all, a ring to bind them."

The message to kids was to be: "A seat belt to save them all, a seat belt to bind them."

'Car Wars'

Last year, Star Wars creator George Lucas allowed the Monmouthshire safety campaign to use the slogan "Car Wars".

This helped cut accidents with 98 fewer people injured on the roads.

Council official, Gillian Morgan said: "Tolkien wrote his books for his children. I'm sure he would have appreciated the campaign."

But a spokesman for Tolkien's family said: "It's not our policy to lend Tolkien's name to public campaigns."
