Rings actor calls for Hobbit TV show
Updated 05 March 2003, 11.35
Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf
Gandalf actor Sir Ian McKellen wants The Hobbit to be made into a TV series.

The Hobbit is the novel which inspired the Lord of the Rings books.

JRR Tolkien wrote it before the Rings trilogy and it features some of the same characters, like Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and Gollum.

'Marvellous'

Sir Ian said he's not ready to stop playing Gandalf the Grey yet, so he's trying to get a TV series on the go.

Rings director Peter Jackson
"I want to play Gandalf again, in The Hobbit," he told Time Europe magazine. "'I've asked Peter Jackson if he'll produce the prequel as a huge, year-long television series.

"All those different strands to the story seem perfect for TV, and we'd do every scene of it. It could be marvellous."

Popular

Sir Ian also admitted he was worried that his character wouldn't be so popular with the fans after he came back from the dead in The Two Towers.

But he was wrong. In fact, he's been so popular that Sir Ian's asked to go back and shoot some more scenes for the third film, Return of the King.
