One in four teens are victims of crime
Updated 19 February 2003, 07.36
The most common crimes are violent ones
A quarter of teenagers have been the victim of crime in the last year, a shocking survey's shown.

More than half of those were violent crimes, and nearly half of kids had something stolen from them.

Fact File
Types of crime reported
Violence 54%
Theft 43%
Burglary 18%
Robbery 13%
Sexual offence 5%
Bullying 4%
Verbal abuse 3%

And worryingly, not all teenagers report it when they're a victim of crime, because they're too scared, or they think nothing will be done about it.

Boys and girls were equally likely to be crime victims, the poll, by charity Victim Support, showed. The poll asked 400 teenagers about crime.

Key facts:

  • A third of teens have been the victim of more than one crime
  • 30% didn't tell anyone about the crime
  • Just over a third went to the police

Girls and boys are affected equally by crime
Victim Support staff said this showed children are more likely to suffer crime than adults.

More support groups must be set up for young people to help them cope with crime, the charity said.
