Bollywood rapped for making fags cool
Updated 18 February 2003, 18.27
Bollywood films are watched by around 15 million people a day
Makers of Bollywood films have been told off for encouraging kids to smoke.

It used to be mainly bad guys who smoked in the Indian films, but now it's the good guys too, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reckons.

More than half of the Bollywood heroes were seen lighting up in their movies, a survey showed.

Calls to stop the smoking

WHO say this is bad because it makes smoking look cool and young people often try to copy their film star heroes.

They reckon:

  • Teenagers who watch films with smoking in them are three times more likely to smoke
  • Youngsters whose fave star smokes on screen are 16 times more likely to think fags are cool

Around 15 million people a day watch Bollywood films.

WHO is now calling on Bollywood to stop smoking altogether in films.
