Great Ormond street names top kid writer!
Updated 14 February 2003, 15.34
Prime minister's wife Cherie Blaire, Tom and the head of Great Ormond Street Jane Collins
What do you get if you challenge kids to fill a blank piece of paper with the best story they can?

Over 1,000 stunning examples of creative writing - and one overall winner!

The Write4GOSH competition was organised by Great Ormond Street children's hospital in London.

Tom Bird, 15, from Angus in Scotland, took the overall prize with his story What Happened Next?

It reveals what happens to characters in fairytales once the tale is over.

For instance, Cinderella sets up a glass shoe factory!

What did they have to do?

The only instruction given to entrants was that the stories had to "cheer up a child in hospital".

Lots wrote about children's hospital experiences - but even more came up with Harry Potter-inspired stories about wizards and witches!

Philip Pullman
All ten finalists were honoured with a trip to London and a prize-giving ceremony.

The final decision was made by a panel of judges, including writers Phillip Pulman and Jacqueline Wilson and original Newsround presenter John Craven.

The other finalists were:

  • Adam Peacock, 16, from Abergavenny, mid Wales.
  • Eleanor Ward, 16, from Enfield, north London.
  • Anastasia Blair, 8, from Holmfirth, West Yorks.
  • Jennifer Tempest Mitchell, 7, from Marlow, Bucks.
  • Katherine Wright, 13, from Grimsby.
  • Tom Tooley, 16, from Cirencester, Glos.
  • Eleanor Murphy, 15, from Maidstone, Kent.
  • Isobel Moulder, eight, from Sevenoaks, Kent.
  • Zoe Halpern, nine, from East Finchley, north London
