Snow shuts down hundreds of schools
Updated 31 January 2003, 15.07
No school means snow fun!
Hundreds of schools across the UK have been ordered to close because of the snowy and stormy weather.

In Aberdeenshire, over 120 are shut - and that's in an area which had record 18 degree temperatures only last week!

Schools were also shut in the Highlands and in Orkney, where no school transport was running on Friday morning.

And across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, over 230 have been told to close by police.

They just don't think it's safe for people to be travelling in the icy conditions.

As well as the safety worries, many homes, schools and businesses have had their power cut off because of the weather.

Jams

And on Thursday night, thousands faced hours of chaos as they tried to get anywhere in cars.

Hundreds spent the night in their cars after traffic jams and icy roads made it impossible to move.

Many had to abandon them in the roads.

Forecasters say there will be freezing weather again on Friday night, with ice on the roads causing more dangerous conditions.
