Myleene speaks out on internet safety for kids
Updated 29 January 2003, 15.46
Myleene found out a man posed as her on the internet
Myleene Klass has joined a campaign to keep kids safe on the internet.

The former Hear'Say star said she wanted all children who thought they'd been approached by an 'internet stalker' to tell someone straight away.

Myleene had first hand experience of adults using chatrooms to upset children, when a man pretended to be her to talk to young Hear'Say fans on the net.

'Alarm bells'

She said: "I was horrified when I found out that one of our young fans had a conversation in a chatroom with someone pretending to be me.

The government's cracked down on internet safety
"I only realised that it had happened when I got a long letter from the girl thanking me for chatting with her. When she mentioned that I had asked whether she had a boyfriend alarm bells went off in my head."

Myleene added: "I had to make sure that she was OK and phoned the NSPCC and the police. That night the girl's mum rang to thank me."

Laws to protect YOU

The pop star said all children should report anything suspicious in chatrooms to the NSPCC.

Myleene is backing the government's Internet Safety Campaign to keep children safe.

The government's changing the law to protect children even more. Adults caught making friends with children on the internet with the intention of hurting them will be sent to prison for five years.
