  Tolkien fans toast eleventy-first birthday
Updated 03 January 2003, 13.54
JRR Tolkien
JRR Tolkien, the creator of The Lord of the Rings, would have celebrated his 111th birthday on Friday.

Fact File
Celebrating Tolkien
Tolkien Society asks fans to "toast" the author
Toast happens at 9.00pm wherever you are
To do proper toast, raise a glass of liquid
Stand up and say "The Professor"
Many fans also going to cinemas to watch the LOTR films

It's a special one because he would have been the same age as his original little, hairy-footed character Bilbo Baggins.

The first book (and film) of the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, opens with the "eleventy-first" birthday party for Bilbo, Frodo's uncle.

And the Tolkien Society is asking fans all over Earth and Middle Earth to send in video clips of their hobbity celebrations.

These will be put together on a special DVD which will also include special b-day messages and fan art.

Tolkien died in 1973, but his work is more popular than ever. The second movie of the trilogy, the Two Towers, has topped the UK and US film charts since its December release.
