Parents face fines if you bunk off
Updated 12 December 2002, 18.59
Around 50,000 kids skip school each year
If you skip school, your parents could soon have to cough up the cash.

Head teachers could soon be given the power to slap on-the-spot fines on parents when their kids are caught skiving.

The Government's seriously thinking about introducing the fines to cut truancy.

Crack down on mums and dads

Around 50,000 children skip school every day in the UK, so it's a big problem.

The fines would work a bit like parking fines
And lots of kids caught bunking off are actually with their parents, which is why the Government wants to crack down on mums and dads.

The fines will work a bit like parking tickets - your parents must either stump up the cash or go to court to argue their case.

Bad idea?

It's not been decided yet how much the fines would be.

But some teachers' groups think it's a bad idea, and that dishing out fines shouldn't be part of a head teacher's job.

Parents can already be sent to prison if their kids constantly skive school.
