  Fire guts Edinburgh's historic centre
Updated 08 December 2002, 15.55
Firefighters struggle with the flames
A raging fire has destroyed an important historical area of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

And experts say it could take up to two days to put out the flames, which have been burning furiously since Saturday evening.

It broke out in a seven-storey building in the Cowgate area of the city, where there are lots of medieval buildings. It's listed as an important World Heritage Site by Unesco.

It's also a popular area for nightclubbers and tourists. About 150 people had to be evacuated from buildings nearby.

The blaze has caused millions of pounds of damage to more than 13 buildings and a firefighter has been hurt in the battle.

It's not known what caused the fire, but it started above a popular club which is also used as a comedy theatre during the Edinburgh Festival.

Firefighters are still trying to stop the flames reaching more historical buildings nearby.

Officials are relieved the fire did not break out during the firefighters' strike because it has been a very difficult blaze to control and fight.
