Philip Reeve wins Smarties book award
Updated 03 December 2002, 16.34
Philip Reeve wins Smarties Book Prize 2003
Votes from around 25,000 children have helped decide the winner of this year's Smarties book award.

And the writer that won children's hearts was Philip Reeve. His book, Mortal Engines took the Gold Award in the 9-11 age group.

First time lucky

It's his first published book - although he's been writing stories since the age of five.

Mortal Engines is an adventure story set in a fantasy world where entire cities are on the move, consuming and attacking each other.

Winning novelist and judge, Emily Smith described it as an 'epic book'.

There's more!

The good news is that the fun doesn't stop there - Reeve plans to release two other books as part of a trilogy. The second part is due out in 2003.

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony hosted by our very own Becky Jago.

JK Rowling
It's the 18th time the Smarties award has happened - with past winners including JK Rowling.

There were also winners and runners-up in other ages categories.
