Britain's firefighters have gone on strike
Updated 13 November 2002, 18.04
The army will take over from firefighters
The country's firefighters stopped working on Wednesday at 6pm in a row over how much they're paid.

Britain's 50,000 firefighters want a big increase to their pay, but the government says it can't afford to give them as much as they want.

Soldiers with hose
Some 20,000 soldiers are stepping in to help fight fires using 50-year old military fire engines called Green Goddesses.

But there are worries that the cover won't be good enough - because they don't have hi-tech equipment.

22-30 November
4-12 December
16-24 December
Schools will stay open but they have been told to have late-night security patrols to stop vandals starting fires.

And it's thought most football matches will not be affected. The Premier League thinks all its clubs should be able to get the special fire safety certificate they need to hold a match.

The strike will finish on Friday at 6pm but there will be more if the pay row isn't settled.
