Is your Potter one of the magic 500?
By Jo Twist
CBBC Newsround Online

Children's book experts have been swamped with calls from eager readers who think they have a first edition Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Dr Philip Errington, kids' book expert at Sotheby's auctioneers, has had more than 50 calls a day since news of the missing first editions came out.

Fact File
It's NOT as valuable if...
It's a 1st edition bound in cloth with gold writing on the front
It's paperback
It's a book-club edition
It's Book 3 or 4
It's in a bad condition

About 200 of the 500 very rare first editions were sent to school libraries and most are still to be found.

But Dr Errington told CBBC Newsround Online there are specific things you need to check for if you think your book is a Potter first edition.

  1. It MUST have the number sequence from 10 down to 1
  2. It MUST have the laminated pictorial board binding which is shiny-ish with no dustcover - not bound in cloth
  3. It MUST be published by Bloomsbury
And of course it should be in good condition to be worth much.

If your book has all of these things, Dr Errington says the best thing to do is to phone a good auction house like Sotheby's or Christie's and talk to the kids' book experts.

They will need to see the book to value it then you can decide whether to keep it or flog it!
