Kids search libraries for missing Potters
Updated 05 November 2002, 19.40
Children in library
School children up and down the country have been spending more time than usual in their libraries.

It's nothing to do with homework - they are trying to dig out the 200 valuable first edition Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone books which have disappeared.

Only 300 of the books were first printed in hardback. And 200 of those were sent out to school libraries.

They didn't even have dustcovers on them!

Fact File
Potter books
Full set of first editions worth 30,000
Even harder to find are 200 copies printed as "proofs"
Had JK's name as "JR" by mistake - worth 8,000
First edition COS worth 2,500

Book experts have no idea where they are now, but say they are worth loads of galleons, sickles and knuts.

Back in 1997 when the book first came out, you could pick up a copy for 10.99.

But now if you sold your first edition, it would go for about 16,000. And if it's signed by JK herself, it could make 20,000!

But be warned - there are loads of internet auction sites advertising first editions for sale. But it's hard to spot fakes on the net!

Make sure you know how to spot a fake by checking out our tips to the right of this story.
