Arabic 'should be taught in schools'
Updated 04 November 2002, 10.49

Muslim girl studying the Koran
Children should be taught Arabic in schools so that Muslim children don't feel so left out, according to a new report.

The European Union report about different groups in society says Muslim children can sometimes find it hard to mix at school because their religion and traditions are different.

Many learn Arabic to read from the Koran, the Muslim prayer book. They learn it at mosques where they go to pray.

But this report says if Arabic was taught alongside French and German that would make them feel more a part of things.

And it would teach other kids about Arabic-speaking communities.
