  Young artists compete for top prize

Creations by children at The Art Work in Oxford
Five of the best pieces of art by school children are up for a top prize.

These works of art have made it onto the shortlist for the Barbie Prize, which is the children's equivalent of the famous Turner Prize for art.

The winner of the Barbie Prize, which could be a school or an individual, will get £20,000.

Learning difficulties

Jodie Fraser, 11, with her artwork, 911
One of the pieces shortlisted is a painting created by burning a match for every victim of the 11 September terrorist attack in America.

The girl who created this work, called 911, is called Jodie Fraser and she's 11-years-old.

Other work shortlisted comes from The Art Room in Oxford - a centre which uses art to help children with learning difficulties.

The five shortlisted schools are:

  • Warren Road Primary School, Orpington, Kent
  • Tarvin Primary School, Tarvin, Cheshire
  • The Art Room, Cowley, Oxford
  • Kent College Infant and Junior School, Canterbury
  • Caol Primary School, Fort William, Inverness-shire

Works of art from lots of schools that entered are on display at the Royal College of Art in London until 27 October.
