Cracking idea to get you eating an egg a day
Updated 03 October 2002, 17.03
The new egg boxes
Eggs are to be sold in round boxes with an eggs-tra one in the box to encourage you to eat one a day.

You might think we are yoking, but they will even be stamped with the day of the week - just in case you forget!

The British Egg Information Council thinks it makes sense to sell them in sevens instead of sixes because they are so good for you.

Fact File
Egg-citing egg facts
One medium egg has 76 calories
Brits eat 30 million a day!
Scrambled eggs are our fave
Fried eggs are second fave
Omelette, egg and soldiers and poached egg are next most popular

For a long time, people thought too many eggs bunged you up. But food experts have scrambled that idea and say it's not true.

They have been sold in familiar cardboard boxes since the 1930s. But no one quite knows why they were sold in sixes in the first place.

The new boxes will also mean you might be a bit stuck when it comes to making your Christmas and Easter decorations at school!

The new egg-citing style of box will be on supermarket shelves in the next few weeks.
