  Smartie-munching world record broken
Updated 30 September 2002, 16.02
Setting a Smartie-eating world record - (C) North News
World records are always being broken in sport, but it's not often that they're broken inside a shopping centre.

But that's what happened at the MetroCentre in Gateshead when 12-year-old Kathryn Matthews set a new mark for eating Smarties with chopsticks.

She chomped her way through an amazing 108 of the tiny sweets in just three minutes, smashing the old record of 83.

Lots of people had a go

Loads of people tried to earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records but it was Kathryn who was quickest.

She put her claim to fame down to a new technique, swallowing the Smarties without chewing them.

But after setting the record she said she wasn't keen on eating any more for a long time!
