Kids want tougher air rifle laws
Updated 05 September 2002, 16.18
Air guns
Kids are calling for stricter laws to stop people from being hurt by air rifles.

Fact File
Air rifles
You can't buy an airgun till you're 17
But you can own one when you're 14
Shops don't have to check for ID

Seven hundred people were seriously injured last year by the guns.

Now young people who have been hurt by them think the laws just aren't tough enough and want the government to do something.

Dangerous

At the moment, air rifles can be used under supervision by young people.

But if they're not used sensibly they can be very dangerous and can seriously hurt or even kill you.

Some people even change them to make them more powerful and dangerous.

You're not supposed to use the rifles in public spaces - like parks or on the streets, but it's hard to stop it happening.

If the government does decide to tighten up the rules in the future, you may only be allowed to use an air rifle in a proper gun club.
