  Sweet victory for lollipop person
Updated 12 July 2002, 19.20
Lollipop people of the year Fred Milstead and Peter Johnson
National winner Fred Milstead and London winner Peter Johnson

They make sure you get to school in one piece and now Britain's best lollipop people have been rewarded.

Fred Milstead from Harlow was the winner of the 2002 Lollipop Person of the Year award.

First Fred scooped the prize for the best Lollipop person in the South East, and then beat off competition from two other top notch regional winners to scoop the national prize.

Not just about keeping kids safe

Winning the award wasn't just about getting kids across the road safe, sound and happy.

He also had to show

  • excellent local knowledge
  • sensitivity to people in cars as well as those crossing the road
  • a tendency to go beyond the call of duty
