Potter first editions go under the hammer
Updated 11 July 2002, 17.24
Harry Potter first edition
It's normally authors who make load of money from books, but that isn't the case at a special auction in London.

Lots of people who own rare copies of books like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have decided to sell them.

When a book is published the first few copies are called first editions and if the book goes on to be a huge success they can become very valuable.

There were only 500 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first editions printed, and if you've got one that's been signed by author JK Rowling it could be worth as much as £10,000.

But that's nothing compared to a first edition of Lord of the Rings, which is thought be worth between £30,000 and £50,000!
