Identity cards could soon be carried by everyone in the UK, according to David Blunkett, the Home Secretary.
Computerised cards could store a photo, finger prints and your name and address.
The government wants to hear what the public thinks before bringing in any cards.
What's the point?
The government thinks ID cards will help:
- stop people who cheat extra money on benefits
But many people think that identity cards will get in the way of personal freedom and cause problems for those who need benefit money the most.
