Teachers chew gum and can't spell
Updated 12 June 2002, 16.48

Teachers are getting dissed, but this time it's not kids complaining it's head teachers.

A new survey spoke to 120 UK headmasters and headmistresses.

It asked them what they thought about the new teachers who turned up at their schools looking for a job.

Pompous and arrogant

These are some of the things your heads were complaining about:

  • The teachers couldn't spell
  • They chewed gum
  • They didn't know the national curriculum
  • They were pompous and arrogant
  • Some didn't even know the name of the school they were applying for a job at!
So are teachers getting worse?

Most of the headteachers in the survey said the quality of teachers was not getting worse.

They thought the teachers applying for jobs were as good as last year, or better.

But it does seem like they've got to get their attitudes in order!
