School cross at St George hairdo
Updated 28 May 2002, 15.34

A 16-year-old England fan has been sent home from school because he has had a St George cross sprayed onto his head.

Liam Baxter from Scunthorpe thought his new hairdo would get the school into the World Cup spirit.

Are schools too strict on style?

Instead the school, Brumby Comprehensive, sent him home.

Fashion statement

It said that if he returned with the same hairstyle he'd be taught away from the other children, so he wouldn't cause a distraction.

Liam spent 3 hours in the hairdressers to achieve the look and won't back down.

"When I was walking to school everyone said it looked good but the teachers looked at it and said 'get out'," Liam said.

The local council in North Lincolnshire said: "We accept many fashion hairstyles, including the David Beckham look, but this was taking it to the extreme and was totally unacceptable."
