Free swims to boost health and cut crime
Updated 20 May 2002, 15.36
Free swimming could be on the cards
Thousands of children could get free swimming in a bid to boost health and cut crime.

The government says kids in deprived areas are less likely to play much sport.

Often they can't afford their local leisure centre fees or even the bus fare to get there.

That means they don't have a decent chance to stay fit and healthy.

Bored

Free swimming will give kids something to do
And they're hanging around with nothing to do which means they could end up committing crimes.

So the government's to spend 2.5 million to provide after-school and weekend swim sessions in poorer areas.

They've already done it Glasgow, Scotland and it's worked very well.
