Voting begins for first 'mini mayor'
Updated 19 April 2002, 16.32
The candidates for mini mayor
Teenagers in Middlesbrough have started to vote for who they want as their mini mayor.

The local council came up with the idea of a mini mayor election to get more people aged 11 to 17 excited about politics.

They also thought it was a good chance for kids to have a say in decisions which affect their lives.

Hot competition

Middlesbrough, UK

And the competition has been hotting up between the 11 young politicians who were nominated by friends.

But who are the Blairs, Duncan Smiths and Kennedys battling it out for the post? And what do they want for young people in the area?

Check out which candidate wants non-alcoholic pubs and who wants a cybercafé!

Just as in adult politics, whoever wins the vote will have to go to Parliament - the Middlesbrough Youth Parliament - and will have a budget of at least £20,000 to spend on young people in the area.

And they will get to work with the adult mayor who is to be elected on 2 May.

The results of the election will be announced soon after the voting ends on 25 April.
