  Will the Budget affect you?
Updated 17 April 2002, 19.42

The government has announced its tax and spending plans in the Budget, and says it wants to spend more money on the health service.

If more money is spent on health, if you or anyone in your family becomes sick, there should be more people and better equipment in hospitals available to make you better.

The government also said it would give some more money to schools, which means there could be better books and equipment for you to work with in the classroom.

The changes will not happen straight away, but the government hopes things will begin to improve in the future.

Less pocket money?

But because the government wants to spend more money, it has to raise more money, and it has done this by raising some taxes.

This means that some people who work, like your parents, may have slightly less money.

So they may have less cash available to spend on you, or to give you as pocket money.

But less well-off families may have more money.

This is because the government has said some parents who do not earn as much as other people will be allowed to keep more of their income.
