Policemen that patrol the streets will try out three different types of hat that might replace the old 12-inch high one.
Upside down flowerpot
One officer said that the old fashioned hats look like an upside down flowerpot and didn't give police much chance when chasing criminals.
He said: "They're no good in a fight or if you're being assaulted.
"If you're being hit you want something that stays on your head."
The three hats that will be tested include one that's shorter than the current model, a strong bowler hat and a reinforced baseball cap.
An officer said: "I wouldn't like to see a baseball cap. It doesn't look smart enough."
