Daniel Elward, 13, had won a certificate for playing the drums and wanted to collect his prize with his hair in spikes.
But as soon as his teachers at Hawthorn High School in Pontypridd saw the two-inch spikes they told him that he had to get rid of them because they aren't part of the uniform code.
They said that if he didn't go home and wash them out, he would have to miss the awards ceremony.
Missed award ceremony
He refused to wash out the spikes and was sent home without his certificate.
He told the Daily Mail: "I didn't wash it out and go back because I didn't want to let the school think I'd done it for them."
"It's annoying because I know lots of people who have gone to school with spikes in their hair."
