Senior members of the Royal Family attended a private church service at Windsor Castle, while Prince Charles and his sons flew back early from their skiing holiday.

The Queen Mother died peacefully at her home on Saturday afternoon, with her daughter the Queen at her side.

Born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, on 4 August 1900, she was 101 when she died.

Body will lie in state

She will be buried next to her husband, King George the VI on 9 April at St George's Chapel near Windsor Castle.

Before that her body will lie in state for three days at Westminster Abbey, where her funeral service will be held.

That means her body will be placed in a glass-topped coffin at the Abbey, allowing members of the public to walk past it and pay their respects.

The ashes of the Queen Mother's daughter, Princess Margaret, will be placed in the tomb with her parents at the same time.

Condolence books are open at St James's Palace and in Edinburgh at Holyroodhouse Palace, and more will be opened at Windsor Castle on Monday.
