Updated 18 March 2002, 13.50
Hunting with dogs
The future of hunting with dogs in England and Wales could finally be sorted out in the next few weeks.

Arguments have raged for years about the controversial activity, which involves using dogs to hunt for foxes and hares.

But this week politicians are voting to say what they think should happen.

They have three options:

  • Ban it totally
  • Continue with tighter controls (the 'middle way')
  • Continue unchanged

The first vote is on Monday in the House of Commons - and it looks as if MPs will choose to ban hunting.

But there's a second vote, on Tuesday, in the House of Lords - and it looks as if they'll choose to support hunting.

So the final say is with the government, who will look at both results and make a decision on what to do - probably by Easter.

It looks quite likely they will go for the compromise or 'middle way'.

This means hunting could continue, but with lots of restrictions and regulations to make sure it's not unnecessarily cruel.

Scotland's already decided

But one part of the UK has already banned fox hunting.

The Scottish parliament voted against it earlier this year, with the ban expected to become law by the end of 2002.
