Five special Jubilee stamps featuring the Queen
Five special Jubilee stamps featuring the Queen

It's exactly 50 years since the Queen took to the throne, and she's posted a special Jubilee message on her website to mark the event.

On the official Jubilee website, she thanks everyone for all the support she's had since she became Queen back in 1952.

The Queen goes on to say that while she sees the Jubilee as a time to celebrate the past 50 years, it's not just about looking back to the old days.

"I believe that, young or old, we have as much to look forward to with confidence and hope as we have to look back on with pride," she writes.

The anniversary of the Queen getting her title, is called Accession Day, and is normally a quiet day at Windsor Castle for the Queen, where she remembers the death of her father King George VI.

But this year, the Queen has decided to stay at Sandringham - the royal estate in Norfolk where the King died of lung cancer.

She will spend the afternoon opening a 1.2m cancer unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in nearby King's Lynn in memory of her father.

The Queen was crowned in the first televised coronation service at Westminster Abbey 2 June, 1953.
