The children's books, His Dark Materials, could be turned into a lavish stage play.

Author Philip Pullman, won the prestigious Whitbread book award for The Amber Spyglass - the third book in the trilogy.

And now the director of the National Theatre in London, Nicholas Hytner, wants to turn the books into a play.

He admitted it would be tough to act out the fantasy books on stage, but said he is confident it can be done.

His Dark Materials are set in strange fantasy lands and include characters like witches, an armoured bear and lots of animals, which are the children's "daemons" in the books.

But the plays probably won't be on stage until at least 2004, as they'll take so much planning.
