  Vomiting virus spreads to schools
Updated 23 January 2002, 13.02
Schools are being affected by the virus
Thousands of schoolchildren in Britain have fallen victim to a virus which causes sickness and diarrhoea.

The outbreak of gastric flu is nothing new - it happens most years, usually in places like schools and hospitals where viruses can get passed on easily.

This year it started in hospitals in Scotland.

Third off sick

Fact File
Virus facts
It's airborne and passes easily between people
It's official name is the Norwalk-like virus
It's named after the US town where it was first identified
It can cause projectile vomiting for up to 3ft!
But now some children in north-west schools have gone down with the illness, often known as "winter vomiting disease".

Three hundred of the 900 pupils at All Hallows School in Penwortham are currently off sick.

Among those who picked up the bug is 15-year-old Jenna Clorin-Wright from Middleton in Manchester.

She said: "You feel terrible really for about three days. All my friends have come down with it, and there is a lot off school."

Symptoms usually last for 24-36 hours, but there are hardly ever any long-term effects.
