Big-money plan to save the railways
Updated 14 January 2002, 13.26
Trains should get better under the new plan
The government has announced that £67.5bn will be spent over the next 10 years to improve Britain's railways.

The money will be spent following an important plan which has been created by something called the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA).

Fact File
Key improvements
Train warning system by 2003
1,700 new coaches in the South East by 2004
£370m on improvements at 1,000 stations by 2004
£330m for track and signalling by 2007
£430m for local rail schemes
Improved staff training
The SRA was set up last year by the government to work out the best way of bringing Britain's train system up to date.

The plan says how much money will be spent and when we can expect certain improvements to be made - although some are still 10 years away.

Lots of the money will be spent in London, where 70% of all British train journeys start or finish.

New safety system on the way

The first thing to happen will be the introduction of a new safety system for train drivers, to make it much easier to stop bad accidents happening.

By the end of the 10 years the government hopes to have 50% more people using trains, but without the trains being as crowded as they are now.
