New theme park ride swings into action
Updated 20 December 2001, 16.44

Hold onto your stomachs, because Drayton Manor - the UK's fourth most popular theme park - has unveiled its newest and scariest ride.

It cost a gut-wrenching 1m and is called Maelstrom, which means "a powerful whirlpool or sense of confusion".

And confused you will be - as it's a massive gyro-swing which seats 32 brave riders.

Fact File
Maelstrom facts
Pendulum is 17.4m long
Swings 22.5m high
Swing angle is 95 to 120 degrees
Gondola whirls around at 5rpm
Riders sit in a circle facing outwards and are swung from a pendulum which whirls around at the same time!

White knuckles!

The people who thought up this hair-raising ride also invented the Apocalypse white-knuckler - the first stand-up tower drop.

They also came up with the Shockwave: Europe's only stand up roller coaster.

Expect to be thrilled and dizzy when the ride opens at the Manor in Spring 2002.
